Lydia and Tim recently tied the knot at the Wilderness Wedding Venue, where Lydia looked amazing wearing our glittering Myrtus gown by Alena Leena bridal. We have asked Lydia some questions about their big day!
How did Tim propose?
On a boat in the middle of Sydney Harbour on New Year’s Eve 2020. We were worried that the fireworks would be cancelled because of the terrible forest fires out there at the time. Tim was obviously more nervous than me, but luckily it all came together for an amazing night! I had no idea it was going to happen and I had been at the free bar all night, when Tim knelt down next to me, whilst the band played ‘Marry You’ by Bruno Mars I just remember shouting in his face.. “you’re not being real.. you’re not being real!”. Excitement did nearly get the better of me and I was flinging my hands around when the ring, flew off my hand.. the whole boat stopped to look for it and we found it inches from falling over the edge!
How was your experience when shopping for your wedding dress?
I found Love in Lace when searching for Alena Leena stockists. I loved how modern her dresses were with her beautiful silhouettes and thought the price of her dresses was really reasonable when compared to designers with similar dresses I had seen. It got in contact with Cath and the LIL team during the winter 2020 lock down. I was blown away with how helpful and genuinely kind they were. I instantly felt I was in the best hands possible and booked in for 9am the day the shop re-opened in April. Cath was just as amazing in person as she was over email. I arrived with my Mum after a snowy drive from Reigate. Coming down the windy lanes and into the drive, Cath was there to welcome us with the heating on. The boutique was so beautiful and I knew I had come to the right place!
The team really made me feel special and not like I was on a conveyor belt like some of the places I visited in London. I would recommend any of my friends and family to go there.
Did you have a ‘look’ in mind when searching for the perfect dress?
The dress I went for was not at all like the one I had imagined before I started looking. I always knew that I wanted something modern, but before I started trying them on I did think I would go for something more sleek or mermaid like. One of the best pieces advice I received was look at dresses you like on REAL people. Although the adverts and stuff you see on Pinterest is lovely they are on models and can sometimes be edited so seeing them on normal people helps set expectations.
When I found LIL I thought I was going to get the Liana dress from Alena Leena. It was the first dress I tried in the shop and I loved it.. I didn’t even want to try the other 4 I had lined up. Luckily Cath and my mum persuaded me to give them a go and I’m so glad I did as Myrtus turned out to be the most beautiful dress I have ever seen and Instantly started picturing myself walking down the aisle, Tims face when he saw me and even how much any future daughter of mine would love it! So I knew it was the one!
Tell us about your wedding day.. where did you get married and what kind of style was your wedding?
We had our large wedding at Wilderness Weddings in Kent. We knew we wanted something the outdoor/ woodland/ festival vibe and the Wildnerness was the perfect venue, with a cabin over the lake and a beautiful glade for the reception. We are fortunate to have some talented friends and wanted them part of our ceremony so had performances throughout. We had multiple areas around the site, dressed beautifully by Hire Love who absolutely nailed the brief! And named the areas by Glastonbury stages.
Due to Kent Council being so oversubscribed we ended up having to have a second, official wedding at Islington Town Hall. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise as it was such a beautiful day with just 10 of our close friends and family. Plus I got to wear another dress!
What were some of your favourite parts of the day and the most memorable?
Definitely walking down the aisle and seeing everyone I knew and loved right there looking back at me. This was one of the first times most of us had been to a big event since the pandemic started and it was so amazing to have everyone there in one place. Just singing and dancing all day to music by our incredible friends has to be another highlight. Our Videographer 'Ignite Films' captured the moment perfectly, we have an incredible video singing to Valerie in a field as the sun set and dragonflies flew overhead.
What advice would you give to brides planning their big day?
The best piece of advice I had was to set yourself a deadline to have as much as you possibly can finished 1-2 weeks before and then just relax into it. Getting those last bits together and finalising everything can get really stressful.. you don’t want to be going into your wedding day in that mindset - enjoy it!
Would you do anything differently if you could do it all again?
Do it all again!
